By: Alieu Jallow The Gambia Revenue Authority on Tuesday 24th November 2020 conducted a daylong seminar with media practitioners to enlighten Journalists on laws governing revenue collection and revenue performance and to create awareness on the GRA processes and procedures. The said seminar was held at the Senegambia Beach Hotel Mr. Yankuba Daroboe Commissioner General of GRA buttressed on the need for general public to be informed on the significance of paying tax as it is the only revenue stream of the nation. “Our major problem is having voluntary tax compliance. If we have the compliance tax level on high, it makes life easier for us as tax collectors and the same time government will also be happy; because that means more revenue;” said GRA boss. Commissioner General Darboe said the event is a special one as it is the first seminar dedicated for the media. Mr. Essa Jallow the deputy Commissioner General pointed out the core objectives of the seminar on how to share tax collection revenue processes and tax administration matters with regards to GRA laws. Speaking on behalf of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), Lamin Jahateh, noted the importance of the seminar as it will match with the mandate of Journalists in informing the public on importance of taxation with need to inform the public on salient tax laws and revenue collections. “We urge the GRA to provide adequate training program for the media as this one day seminar is not sufficient to discuss all the ten (10) tax mandates that the authorities administered.” Other speaker includes the board Chair of GRA, Madam Louise Faye.
