BACKGROUND OF GPU:
The Gambia Press Union (GPU) is the umbrella body for Gambian journalists, registered with the Attorney General’s Office in 1979. The union’s mission is to promote press freedom and media professionalism as well as promote and protect the welfare and safety of media practitioners.
PROGRAMME OFFICER
Key Responsibilities
The programme officer is responsible for a wide range of programmatic areas, including:
Providing general administrative support to the Secretariat
Contributing to day-to-day support to programme/project implementation and ensuring conformity with expected results, outputs, objectives and work-plans
Undertaking donor mapping and engagement
Developing and maintaining good working relationships with donors, partners and other stakeholders
Adhere to the reporting guidelines of donors and partners to ensure that the reporting requirements are met
Developing project concepts and proposals for fundraising
Organising and maintain project files and database
Organising meetings, seminars and workshops, including arranging briefings and appointments, taking notes/minutes and producing reports
Writing, editing, and distributing content, including publications, press releases, website content, annual reports, and other material that communicates the Union’s works
Producing and managing material for the Union’s social media platforms
Strengthening effective relationships with members and other journalists
Maintaining an up-to-date media database and project record
Provide feedback, advice, project updates to supervisor on programmatic activities
Respond to media inquiries and arrange media interviews for any member of management and board
Provide basic photography services
Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Education and Experience
Advanced/higher diploma in Journalism, Communication, Political Science, Development Studies, Law or any social science. Bachelor’s degree would be an added advantage.
Minimum five (5) years of work experience
Demonstrated experience, knowledge and understanding of Gambia media landscape, especially media laws, regulations and issues of journalists’ welfare
Experience in media advocacy, media development and project management would be an added advantage
PROGRAM ASSISTANT (information technology)
Key Responsibilities
The programme officer is responsible for a wide range of IT-related areas, including:
Performing specific technical functions, including changing of hardware electronic components and routine troubleshooting
Maintaining the website
Assists in upgrading patch and anti-virus programs on a regular basis
Supporting the staff in backing up and restoring files, as well as in virus detection, removal and prevention
Ensures the LAN is properly maintained and good practices on security policies followed
Sets up and maintains the office local intranet as well as the local network infrastructure
Assists in backup and restoration procedures of local drivers
Provided advice on ICT procurement
Follows-up service contracts with IT suppliers
Receives equipment purchased and/or rented and follows up on the correctness of the payments and respect of warranties and services provided
Provides ICT support to key events, as required
Plays a proactive role in enhancing logistics/ICT preparedness and support in case of crisis
Provide general computer application support such as graphic design for simple documents, presentations and banners.
Review user needs and questions regarding computer and network access and provide answers/support.
Provide backup and restoration procedures for local drivers.
Train/upgrade staff on necessary office software applications.
Providing cloud storage support
Develop and maintain electronic filing system including safekeeping of confidential materials
Installing computers and other peripherals
Building and maintaining database
Ability to coordinate events and conferences, and write reports would be an added advantage
Provide basic photography services
Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Education and Experience
First university degree or equivalent professional experience in IT or related fields
Good knowledge of ICT equipment and systems
High-level skill in relevant software and hardware
Minimum of two years work experience
CLEANER
Key Responsibilities
The cleaner is responsible for a wide range of cleaning services, including:
Cleaning office space, meeting rooms, stairways and common areas
Cleaning bathrooms and their fixtures;
Cleaning all office furniture
Cleaning the internal and the immediate external surroundings of the premises
Disposing of trash from bins and containers
Keeping the kitchen clean
Refilling supplies, such as toilet paper and paper towels
Ordering new cleaning supplies as needed
Education and Experience
Ability to follow verbal directions in English
Fluency in at least two local languages
Ability to work well alone
General knowledge of cleaning products, supplies, and techniques for cleaning
At least two years of experience in similar work
