Fisheries Ministry and FAO Meet Communities Over New Project

Officials from the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly matters in partnership with Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), on Tuesday 29 May 2023, began a nationwide tour of communities identified for the new Climate Resilient Fisheries for Livelihood Improvement in the Gambia (PROREFISH Gambia).

The team headed by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Fisheries Rohiyatou Kah and Sirah Njie of FAO visited landing sites in the Greater Banjul Area.

Permanent Secretary Kah, told the communities within the Greater Banjul Area that the Government of the Gambia through the Ministry is very much concerned about the welfare of Gambians particularly women. She pointed out that the new project has come to address and improve the fishing sector with new innovation.

“For me as a woman, I am happy that this project is here to uplift the lives and livelihood of women,” PS Kah said.

FAO representative Miss Sira Njie reminded the beneficiary communities that the PROREFISH Gambia project was developed in consultation with FAO. She assured them that FAO would ensure that the project is fully implemented.

Madam Njie pointed out that the PROREFISH Gambia project aims at reducing the high exposure and vulnerability of artisanal fisheries infrastructure support the development of aquaculture and restoring degraded mangroves among other things.

The tour will continue to other beneficiary communities in the hinterland.
