Court Remands 23 Youth for Idle, Disorderly and Common Nuisance

Principal Magistrate Omar Jabang of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 8th August 2023, sent twenty three young men to the State Central Prison at Mile II, after Police Prosecutors accused them of two criminal counts and asked the Court not to grant bail to them.

The Youth, who were brought to the Court under Police Intervention escort, are all male adults, were charged on count one with “idle and disorderly” and on count two “common nuisance”, contrary to the Criminal code laws of the Gambia.

Alpha Dampha, Janka Sanyang, Babucarr Secka, Arafang Badjie, Ebrima Camara, Wa Saidyba, Alieu Khan, Malick Nyang, Muhammed Jobe, Pierre Jatta, Papa Kan, Ebrima Jallow, Musa Sallah, Ebrima Camara, Lamin Manka, Macho Ceesay, Babucarr Jallow, Yerro Saidy, Abdoulie Dibba, Musa Saidykhan, Alfa Omar Jallow, Sheikh Omar Faye and Muhammed Touray.

The young men, who represented themselves, are alleged to have at Serrekunda and diverse places in the Kanifing Municipality, at public places conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace, thereby committing an offence.

Count two stated that. the young men were in this month of August 2023, at Serrekunda and at diverse places within Kanifing Municipality in exercise of common right, obstruct or cause annoyance and inconvenience to the public.

They all pleaded not guilty and asked for the Court to grant them bail on the point that the charges they are facing are bailable offences.

However, Police Prosecutor ASP Oley Bobb, applied for the Court to deny bail to the accused persons as they are likely to commit the same offence again. She said the Police are trying hard to clear the streets and communities of such acts and behaviors. She lamented the insecurity and fear within the public.

Principal Magistrate Jabang after listening to both sides adjourned the matter to 18th August for proper bail consideration.
